Overview
Stowe requires registration for all Short Term Rentals along with an official "Designated Responsible Person" to be available if any issues arise. Below you'll find information on both requirements to help you get your rental properly set up.
Registration
Stowe, Vermont requires annual registration and renewal of Short Term Rentals. The registration fee is $100 and can be processed online at the Stowe Short-Term Rental Registration Website.
DRP Requirement
Stowe requires all Short Term Rentals to have a "Designated Responsible Person", or DRP. The DRP must be available to respond in person at the location of the rental within 45 minutes of being contacted by Stowe Police, Fire, or Town Manager.
This requirement ensures that there is always someone accountable who can address any issues that may arise during a guest's stay, from noise complaints to emergencies.
⏱️ The 45-Minute Rule
Your DRP must be able to physically arrive at your rental property within 45 minutes of receiving a call from town officials. This means they need to live or work within reasonable proximity to your rental.
Your DRP Options
Depending on your situation, you have two main options for fulfilling the DRP requirement:
Finding a DRP Service
Several property management companies in the Stowe area offer DRP services, either as a standalone service or as part of a broader property management package. When selecting a DRP service, consider their response reliability, local reputation, and whether they offer additional services that might benefit your rental operation.
Fire Department Lockbox
Stowe requires that a lockbox is installed at every STR to allow access to the unit by emergency services. Stowe Fire Department has partnered with the company Knox Box for this. A Knox Box is a key lockbox that can be opened by both the owner's keys and the unique master key that Stowe Fire Department has. They can be purchased at the Knox Box Website.
